Kovalevsky Nikolai Pavlovich
Captain. Military branch: 305th Assault Aviation Pavlograd Red Banner Division. Captain Nikolay Kovalevsky, Squadron Commander of the 175th formation of the 305th Storm Surge Division, was born in 1919 in Petropavlovsk, Omsk District, Akmola Region. In 1937 he completed 10 classes. In 1938 he entered the pilot courses of the Aero Club Alma-Ata. After finishing the course he was drafted into the Red Army in 1939 and was sent to serve in the Moscow Military District in the 175th Airborne Division. In August 1941 his combat career began - Leningrad Front, 8th Combat Aviation Division. Then he fought on the Volchov front, from the first day he took part in the battle of Kursk. So on July 7th the flight commander Kovalevsky was given the task of destroying the crossing. Skilfully navigating in the air, his connection, imperceptibly using a small cloud cover, reached the target and destroyed from the first approach to the crossing over Seversky Donets, thus closing a large reinforcement area for the fascist troops. In the evening of the same day the commander of the ground troops asked in a coded message to the regiment commander to express his thanks to the entire pilot flight for the successful operation. 11.08.1943 - received the order of the red banner (Order № 028 of 11.08.43). On 16 August 1943 his unit was assigned the task of destroying the German airfield stationed in the village of Barvenkovo (Poganovka). During one flight they set fire to 5 aircraft, blew up an ammunition depot and a canteen for the flight crew. For the excellent execution of this operation the Commander of the 17th Air Army thanked them and the Regiment Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Valivakhin, was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War 1st grade. On September 27, 1943, carrying out a mission to destroy the airfield in Kantserovka, he was the leader of a group of eight IL-2, bombing strikes and ground attack destroyed 7 and damaged 3 target aircraft. By that time, his squadron, operating on the Southwestern and 3rd Ukrainian fronts, had flown 372 sorties, inflicted huge losses on the enemy, having only 4 combat losses. 09/10/1943 awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, I degree (pr. No. 06 / N of 09/10/43). In May 1944, the Regiment Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Mikhail Dmitrievich Zakharchenko, after a series of successful ground attack missions, was awarded the third government award - the Order of Alexander Nevsky - as part of their groups and for the skilful command of the squadron. For the exemplary performance of the tasks of the command at the front of the fight against the German invaders and for his bravery and courage he was awarded the Order of Alexander Nevsky on 12.06.1944 (№ 027/n of 12.06.44). He died on 29 July 1944.
