Alexey Ivanovich Skurlatov
Title: Senior Sergeant. Branch of service: Artillery. Division: 188th Rifle Lower Dnieper Red Banner division. During World War II Alexey Ivanovich Skurlatov fought in the 3rd Ukrainian front and was twice awarded the Order of the Red Star for courage - in January and in August 1944. However, during the war years, information about the first of these awards was lost. Nowadays, studying the documents of the Central archive of the Russian Ministry of Defense, enthusiasts have come across the lost documents on awarding the order with the missing record of delivery. It is expected that in September 2012 the Order of the Red Star will be sent to the military Commissariat of the Altai territory, where the war hero is living now, and will be awarded to Alexey Skurlatov. As noted in the award leaflet, Sergeant Skurlatov performed a combat feat in January 1944 as a part of the 234th Artillery Regiment of the 188th Rifle Division of the 3rd Ukrainian Front. "Moving in the infantry battle formations and not paying attention to the artillery barrage," the document says, " the Sergeant, not stopping even for a moment, observing the enemy, promptly discovered his firing points." According to the archives, at the time of the enemy's counterattack, Skurlatov destroyed two German soldiers with the personal weapon. After being wounded, he refused to leave the battlefield and continued to conduct intensive shelling of enemy positions. Later, due to a serious injury, Skurlatov was transferred to the communications officer, and in 1944 restored the telephone line Plovdiv-Sofia. In Plovdiv, Alexey Ivanovich became friends with a Bulgarian worker - an employee of the telephone exchange Metodi Vitanov. According to one version, it was him who gave the photo of Alexey Skurlatov to the Bulgarian sculptor Vasil Rodoslavov. Based on this image, the sculptor created a monument to the Soviet soldier-liberator "Alyosha", installed on the "Hill of Liberators" in Plovdiv in 1954. The monument, which can be seen from almost anywhere in the city, was put up on November 7, 1957.
