Sukhoi Grigory Lavrentievich
Sukhoi Grigory Lavrentievich
My great-grandfather Sukhoi Grigory Lavrentievich was born in a family of Cossacks. In 1943, he was drafted into the army by the Petrovsky RVC. Stavropol territory. He served in the 22nd Guards Cavalry Regiment of the 5th Division. From my great-grandmother's memories: "He didn't talk much about the war." So, I know for sure that it was a very scary time. Barefoot, cold, hungry, they went to fight, knowing that their homeland was behind them. My great-grandfather was a very brave, courageous and determined man. In 1944, in a battle, replacing the killed gunner of an anti-tank gun and personally destroyed the enemy's firing point and knocked out two transporters, while 7 German soldiers were killed and was worthy of the Government award of the Order of Glory of III class. In 1945, despite the threat to his personal life, he promptly provided ammunition and stuffing disks for submachine guns. In the same battle, he acted boldly and decisively at the same time destroyed 15 Hitlerites and suppressed the enemy's firing point. For this, he was awarded the Order of the Red Star. And I am proud and surprised by this feat. On February 28, 1945, my brave great-grandfather, risking his life and despite heavy enemy fire, crawled up to the German Bunker, threw grenades and completely destroyed the enemy. He was wounded several times, but after recovering, he returned to the regiment. I was very touched by the story of how he met his elder brother Lukyan Lavrentievich in the fight for the liberation of Konigsberg. There they decided that they would meet after the fight, but, unfortunately, it was their last meeting. Lukyan Lavrentievich was declared missing and till this day we haven’t known anything about him. My great-grandfather lived a very short life and died at the age of 56. It was a difficult but happy life. His family name is proudly borne by his sons and daughters. Great-grandchildren and grandchildren, thanks to the feat of soldiers, live happily. I am very happy and proud to have a piece of my great-grandfather in me. We will always be grateful to him for our freedom and peace. Our family has a tradition. Every year on May 9, we all gather at the monument to our grandfather to worship him for his heroism. Eternal memory to the heroes!
