Kalmataev Nikolay Semyonovich

Rank: Red Army troop type: Land Forces, Air Force (excluding naval aviation), Coastal Service, NKVD troops, Border Guard Unit: 81st Rifle Kalinkovichi red banner command of the Suvorov Division Kalmataev Galima (passport - kalmataev Nikolay Semyonovich) in 1943, called to the Red Army from the 5th branch of the farm "Batrak" Alekseevsky district of Kuibyshev region, now the village Sandy Dol Neftegorsky district of Samara region. After training, Galim is drafted as a rifleman in the 519th Rifle Regiment of the 81st Rifle Division. We do not know what time it is on the calendar. From July 12 to August 18, 1943 the 81st Rifle Division of the 13th Army takes part in the strategic offensive operation "Kutuzov" of Orel, which was carried out during the battle of Kursk. After the Battle of Kursk, the 81st Rifle Division, as a part of the 61st Army, was temporarily held in reserve at the headquarters of the Supreme Command and soon after entered the offensive Chernihiv-Pripyat, which was an integral part of the strategic operation Chernihiv-Poltava - the first stage of the Battle of the Dnieper. After the defeat of the Germans at the battle of Kursk it was necessary to liberate the western part of the country. 01.10.1943 Division, according to information from the magazine of combat operations, reached the Bank of the Dnieper. Two groups of 12 scouts crossed the Dnieper and carried out reconnaissance flights towards the village of the Gluthets. Parts of the division intensively prepared and collected improvised transport material for the crossing of the Dnieper. Some of them crossed the Dnieper for several days. The enemy defended itself fiercely, it had the order to prevent Soviet troops from crossing the Dnieper beyond the line of the defences "East Wall". Beyond the Dnieper, the fascists hoped to find a breathing space, to regroup the troops and to stop the Red Army. "... The Dnieper will flow back rather than the Russians overcoming it...", - said Hitler. One by one the enemy attacks were repelled, our troops continued to cross the right bank. On October 7, our grandfather Kalmatayev Galim crossed the Dnieper together with his 519 rifle regiment. On October 14 at 20.30 the enemy occupied the village of the Gluthets with up to two battalions and 12 tanks. 22 planes bombarded our positions and crossed them. At 9:00 am the soldiers of the 467th rifle regiment decisively drove the Germans out of the village of Glushets and restored the previous position. At 9:40 a.m. the division, supported by artillery and air force, takes the offensive and after fierce fighting, at 1 p.m. they take the village Staraya Lutava. During these battles Kalmataev Galim was killed on October 15. We have no eyewitness reports or documents except for the report of irreparable losses and the battle protocol of the 81st rifle division.
