Galyshev Leonid Semenovich

Rank: Red Navy man. Branch of troops: Soviet Navy and Naval forces of the NKVD border troops. Leonid Galyshev was my beloved grandfather. Unfortunately, this is the only grandfather with whom I could talk and listen to stories from his life - tragic stories on bitter hardship related to his participation in the Great Patriotic war. But he also told many funny and comical life stories of the post-war period. My grandfather was drafted into the Red Banner Baltic fleet in the summer of 1939 at the age of 19, shortly before the start of the Soviet-Finnish war. Served as a Sailor on a patrol boat. The beginning of the war he met on the morning of June 22, 1941 on board the patrol boat - "small hunter", fired from an anti-aircraft gun, repelling attacks by enemy aircraft. In mid-July, he was transferred to the 1st special marine brigade, 2nd battalion, which defended Tallinn. In the battles for the defense of Tallinn, he received a severe wound to his right arm, a shrapnel wound to his right leg, and was heavily concussed. During the evacuation of the hospital, he got on the transport ship "Alev" as part of the 1st convoy. On August 29, 1941 during the" Tallinn crossing", the transport ship "Alev"was sunk by an air bomb. Grandpa was on the upper deck, so he was able to leave the sinking ship. All night he floated on a piece of wooden beam, and only in the morning the rescue came. The crew of the patrol boat, waging an unequal battle with enemy aircraft, saved people from sunken transports through a minefield, throwing a cable, pulled people out of the cold Baltic sea. So my grandfather was saved. Once in a hospital in Leningrad, after a short treatment at the end of September, he was evacuated to the "big land", because the siege of Leningrad began. In early November, he was discharged due to disability.
