Leonty Petrovich Glushchenko (1914 - 1985) – Hero of the Soviet Union, guard lieutenant colonel of the Soviet Army, military navigator of the first class, participant of the Great Patriotic War, as well as the battles at lake Khasan and on the Khalkhin-Gol river. Participant of the Victory Parade in Red Square on the 24th of June, 1945. He was born on the 30th of October, 1914, on the farm of Smokovka of the Zhytomyr region, in a peasant family. In 1931 he graduated from high school, in 1933 – from Kiev construction faculty, in 1935 – from the first year of the Zhytomyr agricultural institute. He worked as an agricultural technician. In November 1936 he was called up into the Red Army. In 1937 he graduated from the Yeisk naval aviation school as an air gunner-bombardier. In 1938 -1939 he participated in battles with the Japanese invaders in the area of lake Hasan and on the Khalkhin-Gol river. In 1941 he graduated from the 2nd Ivanovo higher school of navigators of the air force. He participated in the battles of the Great Patriotic War since June 1941. The crew of Glushchenko L.P. was assigned to lead detachments of long-range Il-4 bombers that flew out to perform particularly important combat tasks. Leonty Petrovich perfectly mastered all types of orientation, in difficult weather conditions of a dark night, learned to accurately find a target and accurately drop bombs on it. The command entrusted him with the most responsible tasks for scouting targets and destroying enemy personnel and equipment. The crew of Glushchenko L. P. became the best in the 10th guard Red Banner regiment of long-range aviation and in June 1943 the guard captain Glushchenko L.P. was appointed a senior instructor in radio navigation and deputy senior navigator for aircraft navigation of the 3rd guard long-range air division. For the courage and heroism shown in the battles with the German-fascist invaders by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated the 18th of September, 1943, Glushchenko Leonti Petrovich was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the order of Lenin and the “Gold Star” medal (no. 1731). Glushchenko Leonty Petrovich went the path from a cadet of the Yeisk naval aviation school to the head of the combat training department, deputy chief of staff for combat training of the 139th guard heavy bomber air division of the 43rd long-range air army. He perfectly mastered navigation on all types of bombers of that time and was one of the first to become a military navigator of the first class. During the years of the Great Patriotic War, Glushchenko L.P. made more than 300 sorties to bomb military-industrial facilities in the deep rear of the enemy, 250 of them at night. In total he spent more than 3,500 hours in the sky. After the war he continued to serve in the Soviet air force. Since 1958 lieutenant colonel L.P. Glushchenko was in reserve. He lived in the city of Poltava. He was actively engaged in public activities and was a deputy of the Poltava city council of II, III and IV convocations. He died on the 25th of November, 1985. He was buried at the Central cemetery in Poltava on the Alley of Heroes. Awards: medal “Gold Star” with the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, three orders of Lenin, order of the Red Banner, order of Alexander Nevsky, order of the Red Star, order of the Patriotic War of the first degree, medal “For Military Merits”, medal “For defence of Leningrad”, medal “For defense of Stalingrad”, medal “For defense of Moscow”, medal “For the capture of Budapest”, medal “For the capture of Berlin”, medal "For the Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945”, more than twenty post-war commemorative medals.
