There were no more letters from him… Only official notification came that Ilya Petrovich Karpov had gone missing in May 1942. After the War, a colleague of his son wrote to his mother and told her that Ilya had died in a terrible battle and was buried in an unmarked mass grave on the outskirts of a small village in the Smolensk direction.
