Trubchevsk, Bryansk Region_x000D_ 04.04.1914 - 07.10.1998_x000D_ Georgy Polyakov was born in 1914._x000D_ He was called up for military service in the Baltic Fleet in 1936, where he was trained and received a military specialty as a boiler technician._x000D_ He arrived for further service in early 1937 on the patrol ship "Groza", which was part of the Northern Fleet formed in 1933._x000D_ The beginning of the Northern Fleet was marked by the transfer of several ships from the Baltic, through the White Sea-Baltic canal to Murmansk._x000D_ There were destroyers Uritsky and Kuibyshev, the patrol ships Uragan, Groza and Smerch, as well as the submarines Decembrist and Narodovolets._x000D_ It was a special purpose expedition._x000D_ Georgy Polyakov was transferred to the patrol ship Smerch as the commander of the engine room in the same of 1937. The main task of the patrol ships was to escort convoys that went from England to Murmansk and Arkhangelsk with loads of military equipment and food for the Soviet army, which ultimately played a big role in our victory._x000D_ The Finnish war began in 1939. The patrol ship Smerch participated in it._x000D_ During the Great Patriotic War, the crew of the Smerch participated in military operations that were of great importance for our victory. During the bombing in the summer of 1942, two bombs hit the ship, and it sank. But it was soon raised and repaired._x000D_ At this time, my grandfather was transferred to the patrol service on the ship "Smerch", on which he served until the summer of 1943, participating in combats in the Barents and White seas, again accompanying convoys, protecting them from enemy submarines and also destroying enemy manpower on the shores._x000D_ After our troops and Navy liberated the Soviet Arctic in 1943, he was transferred to ship repair shop, where he served until January 1946._x000D_ For his participation in the fighting to liberate the Soviet Arctic, he was awarded the Medal For the Defense of the Northern Arctic, the Admiral Nakhimov Medal and the Medal For the Victory over Germany in 1945._x000D_ After the war, he was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War._x000D_ The memory of our sailors-heroes is immortalized in the Museum of the Northern Fleet in the city of Murmansk, where an entire hall with exhibits from the Great Patriotic War is devoted to patrol ships, destroyers and submarines. There are also the side inscription of the ship "Groza", a photo of my grandfather and his book “Naval Affairs", which he saved from the time of war.
