Since December 1, 1941 Kolesnikov I.S. served as military commissar of the 35th separate cadet brigade of the 20th Army of the western front. From October 1942 to October 1944 he was the commander of the 37th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 12th Guards Rifle Division of the Bryansk Front. From December 1944 to February 1946 he studied at the Higher Military Academy of the General Staff named after Marshal of the Soviet Union K. E. Voroshilov. From 1953 to 1970 - commandant of the city of Moscow. On the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. Kolesnikov Ivan Stepanovich took part in battles in the Oryol-Bolkhov operation during the capture of cities: Orel and Bolkhov. In September 1943, he crossed the Dnieper River north of the town of Radul. On the night of September 29-30, 1943, Kolesnikov's regiment was among the first to cross the Dnieper near the village of Glushets, Loevsky District, Gomel Region, Byelorussian SSR, seized and held the bridgehead on the western bank of the river until the crossing of the main forces, inflicting heavy losses on German troops.
