Ermolov Ivan Nikitovich

Rank: Senior military assistant Type of troops: Military medical staff Subdivision: 19th Infantry Voronezh-Shumlinskaya Red Banner Orders of Suvorov and the Red Banner of Labor Division My grandfather - Ermolov Ivan Nikitovich, was born on November 14, 1898 in the village of Semyono-Aleksandrovskoye, Khrenovsky region. In 1917 he received a military education, graduating with honors from the school of paramedic students at the Yaroslavl hospital, from 1918 he served as a paramedic in the 424 field hospital, from 1935 - in the 56th rifle regiment of the 19th rifle regiment of the Voronezh-Shumlinskaya Red Banner Order of Suvorov and the Red Banner of Labor , since 1939 - chief of a pharmacy in the 282nd rifle regiment of the same division with the rank of senior military assistant. For the first time, the division entered into battle with Nazi troops on July 19, 1941, in the area of the city of Yelnya as part of the 24th Army of the Western Front in the Yelninsky offensive operation, the Vyazemsk defensive operation. In October 1941, his grandfather was seriously wounded in the right leg, and was captured. The losses in killed and wounded of the Red Army exceeded 380 thousand people, more than 600 thousand people were taken prisoner ... From October 1941 to January 1945 he was in captivity by the Germans. In what camps he stayed, there is no information. There were two attempts to escape from captivity during transportation to other camps, both unsuccessful. During the second escape, my grandfather was seriously wounded in the head ... After being checked in a special NKVD camp in January 1945, he was sent as a rifleman to the 30th separate assault rifle battalion (OShSB). These units from among the officers of the Red Army who had been in captivity or in the occupied territory, began to form in the special camps of the NKVD. The assault battalions were thrown into the "most active sectors of the front," that is, they were used as penalties in the very heat of battles. The composition was formed from among the officers who were in captivity or in the occupied territory for some time and who were unable to prove their participation in partisan actions against the enemy, but now they could prove their loyalty to the Motherland with arms in hand. Stormtroopers were fundamentally different from penalties in that they were neither convicted nor deprived of officer ranks and awards. The uniform was set in accordance with the position: arrows - in the clothes of a private, commanders of squads and platoons - with insignia of sergeants and lieutenants, even if they were captains or colonels. Grandfather proved his loyalty, was awarded the medal "For Valor and Courage in the Great Patriotic War." Transferred to the reserve (order No. 0265 of 13.10.1945) of the Baltic Military District as head of the pharmacy of the 282nd Infantry Regiment.
