MF Afanasyev and his comrades got to the ship "Luga". During the passage, the ship was subjected to a torpedo attack by the enemy. One of the torpedoes hit the target. Together with many others, Mikhail Fadeevich found himself in the water. I managed to catch hold of a floating, empty cable reel. Later, the survivors were picked up from the water by teams of sailors on boats specially directed for this purpose. Then there was a way by sea to Kronstadt. Subsequently, M.F. Afanasyev had a chance to fight near Leningrad. In an artillery regiment, he commanded a battery. He was wounded several times. After one of the battles, doctors removed more than three hundred fragments from his body. During the battle at the Pulkovo Heights, a mine explosion almost blew off his right arm. It took him two days to get to the hospital, where a young surgeon performed a unique operation at that time and saved his hand. Having recovered from his wounds, he returned to combat formation. After the blockade of Leningrad was lifted, Mikhail Fadeevich, with the rank of major, fought in the 2nd Belorussian Front, and then on the 1st Belorussian Front.
