In 1939, he graduated with honors from the Kiev military school and was left at the school as a platoon commander. In the fall of 1939, the annexation of Western Ukraine took place. Lazutin was taken to the district headquarters as a signalman. After this operation in 1940 he was appointed adjutant to the district headquarters for communications. At this time, the exercises of the three armies took place. The headquarters was in Ternopil. The day before the start of the war, Nikolai Ivanovich was sent to Kiev to receive communications. Kiev was bombed at night. The soldier returned back to Ternopil, and the headquarters was no longer in place. He rushed in the footsteps. He found his own in Kiev, in the so-called "Kiev boiler". They tried to escape from it for a long time, but by September they were completely surrounded. As a result, in September 1941, the Germans surrounded and defeated the troops of the Southwestern Front. Over six hundred thousand soldiers and officers were taken prisoner. Under such circumstances, Lieutenant Nikolai Ivanovich Lazutin was taken prisoner. He escaped four times, four times he was brought back. For the last escape he was sent to Dortmund prison. It was freed by American troops on April 14, 1945. He, as an officer of the Soviet army, was offered to work on the repatriation of Russian prisoners. He agreed. At the end of April, he was already in the position of deputy chief of staff for repatriation. In October, Nikolai Ivanovich, as a former prisoner of war, was demobilized to the 245 filtration camp. In 1952 his rank was restored and he was given awards: "For the Defense of Kiev", "For Military Merit" and the Order of the Patriotic War.
