Ghukasyan Bagdasar Vagarshakovich
Rank: Junior Sergeant. Branch of troops: land forces, air forces (except naval aviation), the coast guard, troops of the NKVD, the border guards. Division: 89th Taman Red Banner Red Star rifle division of the Order of Kutuzov. My great-grandfather, Junior Sergeant Gukasyan Bagdasar Vagarshakovich, was born in 1922 in the village of Orodzhalar in the Bagdanovsky district of the Georgian SSR. Great Patriotic war started when he was 19 years old. He was a young and handsome guy with big plans for the future, but the war changed everything. As soon as the war started, he and another 18 young unmarried guys were conscript and sent to the city of Yerevan. The 89th Armenian Rifle division was formed there (since October 9, 1943 it was renamed into the 89th Taman Red Banner Red Star rifle division of the Order of Kutuzov). For Sergeant`s training only boys with the secondary education were selected among those who were drafted. In a group of 19 people, only 3 had a secondary education, including my great-grandfather. Upon graduation in 1942, he was promoted to the rank of Junior Sergeant. My great-grandfather and all the others were sent to a transfer point in the city of Tbilisi, from which they were sent by groups to the front line. Ghukasyan Bagdasar was sent to the Caucasian front to defend the city of Grozny in order to prevent the enemy from advancing in the direction of the Chechen-Ingush ASSR. After completing preparations for the defense of Grozny, the 89th (Armenian) Taman Rifle division gradually moved forward, where it equipped defensive lines across the Terek ridge, coming into direct withstanding with the enemy. During the bloody battles, my great-grandfather was injured and was taken to the Mozdok hospital. After examination and treatment, the military medical Commission decided to transfer him to a reserve for the health reasons, but the desire to protect the country from the fascists was so strong that he had neglected the doctors opinion. The head doctor of the hospital sent a telegram to Bagdasar`s small homeland, asking the family to come to the hospital for their son. My father and younger brother came to Mozdok to pick up my great-grandfather. But Bagdasar even in the presence of his relatives had not agreed with the opinion and persuasive arguments of doctors. Relatives still remember his words with bitterness in their hearts: "I can't go home, because my comrades are still fighting against and destroying the fascist reptile that treacherously invaded our Homeland." In 1943, after being discharged from the hospital, my great-grandfather was sent to the Southern front, where the 89th (Armenian) Taman Rifle division was located, defending the Caucasus as part of the 58th Army. Junior Sergeant Gukasyan Bagdasar Vagarshakovich went missing during fierce fighting on the Kerch Peninsula of Crimea. Unfortunately, I never met my great-grandfather, Junior Sergeant Ghukasyan Bagdasar Vagharshakovich, but for me he is a hero. According to the memories of my relatives and friends who are happy to pass them on to us, the descendants, and taking into consideration his military battle record and fate, i am hundred percent sure that my great-grandfather was a hero. This is very important for us, because he could live a completely different life, enjoying his bright future. The war drastically changed his life but revealed the true face of a man who stood up for his homeland till his last breath. Only thanks to the heroic deeds of such soldiers, post war generations can enjoy peace and the harmony of living. Terrible events of the past war should be a lesson for each of us to prevent death of the millions of citizens of our great country again. If I was asked what I would say to my great-grandfather if I met him, I would be happy to greet him saying, "Thank you, grandfather!" and to hug him with all my might.
