Gavrilenko Vladimir Mikhailovich

Rank: Lieutenant. V. M. Gavrilenko - my uncle, brother of my mother Falko (Gavrilenko) Elena Mikhailovna, took part in the battle of Kursk (passed away in 2011). In her memoirs, my mother mentioned that her brother went to the front at the age of 20, so it is possible that the year of his birth was indicated not correctly (it could be 1921). After graduating from the Sumy artillery school, he served in Brest on the Bug (a miniature picture was taken there on December 19, 1939). In 1940, he entered the Frunze Military Academy (General Staff Academy). After completing the 1st year of the Academy as an external student, in the summer of 1941 he volunteered for the front line - the only one from his academy group. According to my mother's memoirs, in his letter from the front line, her brother wrote that he was appointed the commandant of the Tver garrison. His fellow soldier-countryman Semyon Kovalenko, who returned to the village of Maly Istorop in the Lebedinsky district of the Sumy region after the war, told Vladimir's parents (Mikhail Semyonovich and Varvara Vasilyevna) that he had seen him wounded in a medical battalion on the Kalinin front. Some of them were surrounded, and those who were able to break out of it with weapons in their hands returned to their regiments. The Nazis did not spare the wounded from the medical unit. For a long time, V. M. Gavrilenko was considered missing. And after the recognition of his death at the war, the name of V. M. Gavrilenko was enscribed on the stele of the memorial of Glory in the city of Lebedyn, Sumy region (see on pictures). My mother published memoirs about my brother and poems dedicated to him in the local press. My late cousin Vladimir Gavrilenko and I were named after my uncle Volodya. V. M. Gavrilenko's great-niece Tatyana Vladimirovna Petrenko and her daughter Taisiya are planning to take part in the Immortal regiment parade together with me. Of his siblings, Raisa Mikhailovna Gavrilenko is alive and lives in Verkhovnya village, Ruzhinsky district, Zhytomyr region, Ukraine.
