During the battle on the 20th of March, 1943, he took command of the company in view of the commander's illness and, skillfully placing forces, led the unit to attack for the village of Shvedchikovo. In difficult moments he inspired the fighters with his personal example. And in the end the village of Shvedchikovo was retaken from the Germans with a significant preservation of the personnel of the division. He took care of the soldiers during the battle, kept a sharp eye on the provision of assistance to the wounded. When he noticed a seriously wounded soldier he personally carried him out of the battlefield under crossfire. For skilful leadership of the battle, for the courage and perseverance shown, comrade Bulgakov is worthy of the government award of the order of the Red Star. On the 19th of August, 1943, he was awarded the order of the Patriotic war of the first degree (order no. 126 / N dated the 19th of August, 1943). From the award list: “On the 7th of July, 1943, lieutenant Bulgakov made a reconnaissance of the front edge of the regiment, accurately mapped out the location of the trenches of firing points, observation posts of battalion commanders and the location of bunkers in the front line of defense of the 258th rifle devision under heavy bombing and rifle and machine-gun fire. The same night his platoon built constructed a command post for the battalion commander, connected the company's defensive areas with trenches and landed one bunker; despite the continuous shelling of mortars and artillery as well as despite the infiltrated Hitlerite machine gunners who moved in for the distance of 200 meters, the platoon arrived in the unit without losses. On the night of the 9th, the 10th and the 11th of July, 1943, they repeated the same thing. On the 15th of July, 1943, his platoon was assigned to the 224th rifle regiment with the task to ensure the offensive. Bulgakov was the first to break into the village of Teply with a group of his fighters where he made a reconnaissance about the presence of the enemy’s obstacles and thus indicated free ways for passing infantry and motochastes to the command of rifle regiments. Upon completing the combat mission he personally brought trophies - a company mortar and a machine gun. On the 23rd of July, 1943, the company was ordered to perform a continuous mine clearance along the front line of Grankino to ensure the offensive of the 211th rifle regiment. Bulgakov's platoon completed the combat mission in full and on time – they cleared up 6 minefields under continuous fire from the enemy’s mortars and artillery. His platoon removed 480 anti-tank mines and 600 anti-personnel mines during the time from 6 p.m. till 10 p.m. On the 17 of July, 1943, the company was ordered to build up 4 bridges, to begin with two bridges to be constructed within two hours in the village of Krasovka. The area was shelled with mortar and machine-gun fire and by a group of Hitlerite gunners as well. Bulgakov's platoon cleared up the damaged bridge, prepared timber and built up two new bridges with the length of eight linear meters each within two hours. This ensured the crossing of hundreds of tanks, artillery and other motorized units that suddenly wedged into the battle lines of the Nazis and had a good offensive success. From the 28th till the 30th of July, 1943, the company was assigned to the 15th rifle regiment to ensure the ground gaining of the advancing units. On the night of the 28th of July, 1943, lieutenant Bulgakov's platoon was given the task of making two passes through German minefields and mined wire barriers. Under Bulgakov's personal guidance two passes 30 meters wide were made in front of the battle lines 10-15 meters away from the Germans, under a shower of machine-gun bullets and under the continuous illumination of rockets; 26 German mines were removed, a wire fence (Bruno spiral) was cut and dragged to the side. After the work was completed, comrade Bulgakov familiarized the commanders of the rifle divisions with the locations of the passages and returned to the unit without losses. He was worthy of the government award of the order of the Red Star. He was seriously injured and was sent to a Moscow hospital for treatment. After the hospital he was in the army until August 1945.
