Surnev Nikolai Grigorevich

He was born in the village of Bolshoye Gorodishche, Bolshe-Troitsky District, Kursk Region (now Shebekinsky District, Belgorod Region). After finishing the seven-year School he studied at the Belgorod Medical College and at the same time studied at the flying club. In 1940, without graduating from college, he was sent to the Chuguev Military Aviation School of Pilots. After graduating from the Aviation School in 1942, Nikolai served for about a year in it as an instructor pilot, repeatedly submitting reports about being sent to the front.
However, only in August 1943 he began to fight in his native places, in the Belgorod front as part of the 866th Fighter Aviation Regiment(Fighter Aviation Regiment). By March 1945, he was deputy squadron commander of the 866th Fighter Aviation Regiment of the 288th Air Division of the 17th Air Army of the 3rd Ukrainian Front. He is the Hero of the Soviet Union, Decree of the PVS of the USSR dated 08/18/1945.
During the 21 months of his participation in the Second World War, he shot down 23 enemy aircraft. The most "fruitful" year for him was 1945 - 15 destroyed enemy fighters and bombers. After the end of the war, N.G. Surnev continued to serve in the fighter Aviation of the Air Defense Forces. He served as a squadron commander in the 472nd Air Defense Fighter Regiment, which was based on the outskirts of Orel.
In the early 1950s, the Regiment began to receive new MiG-15 jet aircraft, and Surnev was one of the first in the Regiment to master the piloting of a jet fighter. On March 5, 1952, Senior inspector-pilot for piloting techniques and flight theory of the 15th Guards Air Defense Division of the Air Defense Guard Leiutenant Colonel Surnev N.G. died while testing a new jet fighter MiG-15 "bis" near Orel. The hero was buried with all the honors at the Troitskoye military cemetery in Orel.
In his homeland, in the village of Bolshoye Gorodishche of the Shebekinsky District of the Belgorod Region, a bronze bust of the Hero is installed, there are Surnev streets in the city of Shebekino and in the village of Bolshoye Gorodishche. The Bolshegorodischensk Secondary School and the military-patriotic Aviation club "Wings of the Belgorod region" bear his name.
