Kamenskikh Anatoly Ivanovich
Division: 89th Rifle Division (1st formation) My grandfather, Kamenskikh Anatoly Ivanovich , was born in Sarapula, Udmurtia ASSR. In 1944, being a 17-year-old boy decided to go to the front, at the station took a passing train, but in Saratov region town of Balashov was removed from the train. He told us: "I was asked, where I was going" I said that I want to get to the front, I will fight. I was a tall guy, when they asked me what year of birth I was, I said that 1924, and actually 1927, thus added to my age. They believed me, I had no documents on me. That is how I got to the front, to the marching company of the 267th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 89th Guards Division of the First Belarusian Front. The commander of the corps was Bersarin, who later became the commandant of Berlin. Thus, we reached the city of Frankfurt-on-Oder in Germany with battles. In early February 1945, at night we forced the river Oder, there was ice, but the water was already up to the knee. Having crossed, we started the fight, we had to take the bridgehead to get a foothold, but we were pinned down with machine gun fire, we couldn't move on. Then, the platoon commander announced the general structure, and set the task of eliminating machine-gun points, he asked: "Any volunteers? Who will go?". Me and two other comrades went forward. We were given anti-tank grenades and were ordered to dispense each of us to a machine-gun point. And I was given a rocket launcher and instructed to give a signal with a series of red rockets after the destruction of the firing points. We started to follow the commander's order. When the firing points were blown up, I gave the signal with the flare gunner and the offensive began. For this feat I was presented for awarding the title of Hero of Soviet Union. But on February 04, 1945, in street battles, I received shrapnel wounds in both hands. The fighters and I fought from a residential house, a grenade flew into the window of the house, began to spin on the floor, my comrades got confused..., I grabbed it and threw it out of the window, but the explosion hit me and I was badly injured. After the battle, I was placed in the field hospital where I was operated on urgently; I lost three fingers on both hands. I passed 4 stages of evacuation and was admitted for treatment in the evacuation hospital №1408 only on 22.03.1945. I met the first day of Victory in the hospital. He was assigned to the 2nd disability group. In 1990-92, we, children and grandchildren, appealed to Sarapulskiy Gorvoenkomat, as well as to the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense of Russia, with a request to find documents on the awarding of our grandfather to the title of Hero. The answer was that such documents existed, and they were signed by all the commanders, including the corps commander. We can only speculate why they were not given a move, maybe due to injury and departure from the unit, as well as confusion with the years of his birth in the turmoil of war the documents were simply lost. It's a shame that our grandfather did not receive his reward during his life.
