Zemtsov Georgy Nikolaevich

Georgy Nikolaevich in 1942 - a 19-year-old lieutenant, deputy commander of the BM-13 "Katyusha" rocket launcher battalion, was withdrawing his unit from near Belgorod - four Katyusha installations, a fuel tanker, a commander's willys, about 50 fighters. There was no front, the Germans broke through it and our units retreated. Where were the Germans, where ours were nobody knew. They retreated at night, during the day they defended themselves in the groves. The Luftwaffe bombed any group of our troops that they found. There were practically no small arms, except for his pistol and one machine gun on a jeep. The reconnaissance on which road to go was carried out during the day. During one of the patrols, they stumbled upon the tail of the column, but in the dust they could not make out ours or the German. We stopped together with the column, listened - the speech was German. They quietly lagged behind and to their own. It became clear that a powerful mechanized enemy group was advancing along the same road with them. Clarified its composition - 4 tanks, ten trucks with infantry, a fuel tanker, command vehicles. The column stopped for the night in the village. It's time to make decisions. It is clear that the location of our column could become known to the Germans at any moment. Then the lid is nothing to defend with. Georgy Zemtsov decided to attack first. Attack against orders. Katyusha is a secret weapon and closer than 15 km rapprochement with the Germans was prohibited. We made an ambush on a hill overgrown with wood. The road from the village led to this hill then bends around it. Four installations were well camouflaged and, with negative trim, direct fire aimed at the road, conventionally dividing it into four parts. Aiming at the eye. When in the morning the German column at the exit from the village was drawn into this section of the road, they fired a volley from all four installations .... The shells did not have time to turn on the reactive part, on one starting powder charge they entered the midst of the Germans. The howl of shells, flames, explosions - everything was mixed in this volley. Nothing was visible, everything was covered with smoke .. George quickly took the Katyusha away after the volley, fearing the Luftwaffe who arrived after 10-15 minutes after the discovery of ours ... Another hour or two, there was something smoldering exploded. But here's the thing ... there was no one to call the aviation. The battalion of "Fritzes" and not having time to understand what had happened turned into ash ... True, the young lieutenant did not report this episode to the command, fearing the tribunal for formally violated the order. I wonder what the Germans thought at the headquarters? Where did the warhead go without even reporting the attack? It disappeared from the theater of operations. There was and now not. This is how it happens ...
