Alekseenko Ilya Prokofievich was born into the family of a poor peasant. In the spring of 1918, as a nineteen-year-old boy, he voluntarily joined the Krasnogvardeisky detachment, and then the Kupsk infantry regiment. He passed the military path from Belgorod to Taganrog, participating in battles against the German invaders, Haidamaks and White Guards. In 1940, Colonel I.P. Alekseenko was awarded the next military rank - major general of tank forces. Then the summer of 1941, heavy fighting in the main strategic direction of the fascist troops. By July 4, the German 3rd Panzer Group Gotha reached the Lepel-Ulla-Polotsk area. On the morning of July 6, she crossed the western Dvina in two places. The enemy was striving for the Dnieper. “On the approaches to this most important line in the area north-west of Orsha,” says the “Brief History of the Great Patriotic War of the Soviet Union,” “the resistance of the Soviet troops was especially difficult. By order of the commander of the Western Front, the troops of the 20th Army, General P.A. Kurochkina, on July 6, they launched a counter-strike from the area north and west of Orsha into the flank of the enemy's 3rd tank group. The 7th and 5th mechanized corps took part in the counterattack, which in the middle of the day on July 8 moved 30-40 km towards Lepel. " As writes in his memoirs "At the beginning of the war" Marshal of the Soviet Union A.I. Parts of the 5th corps fought defensive battles in almost complete encirclement. By order of the army commander, on July 10 they left the encirclement in the Orsha region. In July, fierce fighting broke out in the Smolensk region. Speaking about the Smolensk battle, V.I. Eremenko again notes: “Among the formations of the 20th Army, the 5th Mechanized Corps under the command of Major General of Tank Forces I.P. Alekseenko ". At the end of July, the enemy struck strong flanking attacks on the 16th and 20th armies near Smolensk and surrounded them. Our troops with heavy fighting broke through the encirclement ring. In these battles, General A.I. Alekseenko was seriously wounded on August 3 and died of his wounds the next day. He was buried in the city of Vyazma. For courage and combat skill shown in those stubborn, fierce battles, he was posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin.
