In 1938 she finished 10 classes of school No. 523, which was located on Mira Avenue, Moscow, entered Moscow Hydrometeorological Institute and dreamed of becoming an oceanologist. In August 1941, the institute was reorganized into the Higher Military Hydrometeorological Institute of the Red Army. The students were offered the choice of either voluntarily joining the Red Army and continuing their studies, or continuing their studies in other educational institutions. Everyone decided to voluntarily join the ranks of the Red Army. All summer, students dug anti-tank defensive ditches on the outskirts of Moscow. They were on duty on the roofs, extinguishing incendiary bombs, including Alexander Kovalev. They took part with enthusiasm in the defense of Moscow. In October 1941, Alexandra Grigorievna Kovaleva was enrolled as a cadet at the Higher Military Hydrometeorological Institute. The students completed their studies during the evacuation in the city of Leninabad. In June 1943, Alexandra Grigorievna Kovaleva was sent to the active forces.
