Rank: Red army
Branch of military: Land Forces, Air Forces (except for naval aviation), Coast Guards, NKVD troops, Border Guards
Division: 357th rifle division of the order of Suvorov
My grandfather, Alexey Dmitrievich Korostelev (on his mother's side), died in February 1942 in one of the offensive operations to capture a settlement in the Kalinin region. Here is an extract from the War diary of the 357 rifle division: "28.02.42 G. the division moved to the attack on D. Scully from the West and South - West. The enemy, supported by a group of skiers with machine guns up to 150 people, conducting intense fire, counterattacked our units. Suffering heavy losses, the division's units were forced to withdraw to their original position. Further attacks were unsuccessful. The enemy, using its superiority in manpower and fire power, repeatedly tried to counterattack, but all its attacks were repulsed by the 1190 rifle regiment. Losses killed and wounded 150 people. 01.03.42 the enemy continued to hold Shkurli, having two large-caliber machine guns and eight light machine guns. The garrison of Shkurla consisted of machine gunners. On the night of 01.03.42 g. a group of machine gunners-skiers 25-30 people leaked on the road Petrovskie Gari-Shkurli, but were scattered and fled into the forest. As a result of the fighting from 26.02. to 01.03.42 g for the capture of Shkurla, parts of the division lost 620 people killed and wounded. Such large losses are explained by the presence of a large clear clearing around the village, the lack of hidden approaches and significant enemy firepower. 02.03.42 g. parts of the division occupy Petrovsky Gari and the forest South-West of Shkurla. 03.03.42 g. 1188 rifle regiment-1 km West of Shkurla 1190 rifle regiment-Petrovskie Gari 1192 rifle regiment-South-West of Shkurla, covering the road to Mantrovskie».
