Kalyapin Stepan Dementievich after completing the first year of the Serdobsk zootechnical school voluntarily entered the Soviet Army and in May 1940. entered the Tashkent Military School named after V.I. Lenin. After graduation in August 1941 he received the rank of a lieutenant colonel of the platoon 1277 SP 389 SD, where he taught cadets of the Tashkent school until summer 1943. In March 1943 he was appointed commander of battery 269 of the mortar regiment of the 8th Panzer Corps. With the 08.07.1943 G. as part of the 2nd Panzer Corps he took part in the battle of Kursk. Throughout the Great Patriotic War he was commander of the 2nd battery of the mortar regiment of the 269th Guard, Sedletsky, the orders Red Banner of Kutuzov and Alexander Nevsky Regiment of the 8th Panzer Corps. As a part of the fronts Voronezh, 1st Ukrainian, 1st and 2nd Belarusian Front he took part in the battles for the liberation of Ukraine, Belarus and Poland (Lublin, Warsaw) and fought in East Prussia. In January 1945 he was wounded. On the day of the victory, 9 May 1945, at the age of 22.5 years, he was in Prenzlau, 70 km from Berlin, in the rank of a captain.
