He fought in the 294th rifle division, formed in the Oryol military district of Lipetsk. The division arrived from the place of formation by rail to the city of Volkhov, where it became part of the 54th Army. By order of the 54th Army, the division was assigned the task of moving to a tough defense at the turn of Tortolovo, Gaitolovo, and shingle Lipka (which is about 10-11 km northeast of the large settlement of mga, Leningrad region), with the leading edge along the Eastern Bank of the Chernaya river.
