Babasin Nikolay Fedorovich

Type of troops: Artillery Subdivision: 299th Infantry Division (1st formation). Babasin Nikolay Fedorovich, was born on February 4, 1923 in the village of Stemassy, Alatyr region. He finished 7 years in local school and entered the Secondary School No. 9 in Alatyr to continue his studies. He managed to finish the school in June 1941. Then the war began. He was drafted to the Army in January 1942. He studied at the infantry school for secondary commanders until March 1942. As part of the 157th cadet Rifle Brigade, he was sent to the front. He fought near Leningrad and Staraya Russa. In July 1942 he joined the Komsomol organization and was sent to Stalingrad as part of the 956th Rifle Regiment of the 299th Division. N.Babasin was seriously wounded in both arms and was shell-shocked In October 1942. He had to stay in a hospital till March 1943, later he was declared unfit for military service. Alatyr city military registration and enlistment office sent him to work in the Alatyr NKVD Headquarters, where he took various positions until 1955. At first, he was a local policeman in Ivankovo-Lenino, serving also for the villages beyond Sura: Kuvakino, Solovyevsky. At that time, many deserters were hiding in the forests, killed and robbed the local population. So he had to fight on the “local front”. N.Babasin was accepted as a candidate for membership in the Bolshevik Communist party on the recommendation of the Primary Party Organization at the Alatyr NKVD department(January 1945). In July 1946 he became an active party member. He graduated from the Kuibyshev’s officers school of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs, in absentia after the war, received a secondary legal education. Until 1955, he worked in various positions: as a police chief in Vurnary, later- in the city of Sumerla. In 1953-1955 he worked as a senior investigator in the criminal investigation department in Alatyr. In the period from 1951 to 1955, he studied at the Kanash Teachers' Institute in absentia and got the diploma of a teacher of Russian language and literature. Then, from 1965 to 1969, he graduated from the Chuvash Pedagogical Institute named after I.Yakovlev in absentia in the same speciality. From 1955 until the end of his life he worked as a teacher of Russian language and literature at a school for working youth in Alatyr. The family carefully keeps his awards: the Order of the “Patriotic War of the 2nd class”, the Order of “Glory of the 3d class”, the Medal for” Victory over Germany”, and commemorative medals.
