On April 26, 1945, on the outskirts of Berlin, the sappers of his division cleared a narrow area through which the tanks were to pass. It was impossible to waste a minute to accomplish this mission, and the tankers refused to advance along this section, because they were afraid to go astray and blown up. Without hesitation, my great-grandfather threw on a raincoat and ran through the cleared area, commanding the tankers to follow him. The line was successfully taken. Our family always proudly recalls this act as heroic. For all the time of participation in the Great Patriotic War, the great-grandfather has established himself only on the positive side. He has earned many awards. My great-grandfather died on June 26, 1956 from heart disease in Moscow as head of the Engineering Department of the Special Construction Directorate of the Defense Ministry at the age of 46.
