In 1929, the family moved to Izhevsk, where he entered school and graduated in 1941. After school, he worked at a motorcycle factory as a milling machine operator from August 1941 to September 1942. He was called up to serve in the Soviet Army and sent to 2nd reserve airborne regiment. As part of 13th Guards Regiment of the 1st Airborne Division, he participated in the combat near Staraya Russa. _x000D_ On August 7, 1943, he received a minor shrapnel wound in his thigh with a slight concussion. After treatment in a hospital in the city of Vyshny Volochek and completing courses for junior lieutenants, my father in May 1944 was sent as a platoon commander to 1st Baltic Front, to 6th Guards Army, 51st Guards Division, 156th Guards Rifle Regiment. Participated in combat near the city of Vitebsk. On June 23, 1944, after an artillery preparation, the regiment began to attack the headquarters of the fascist regiment in the village of Filatovo. The platoon commanded by my father destroyed 2 teams of German anti-tank guns and 3 enemy machine-gun points in this battle. During a further offensive near Sirotino station, calling on his soldiers to attack, he was seriously wounded in the leg by a German sniper who fired explosive dum-dum bullets. He lost a lot of blood. My father was taken from the front line in a cradle, which was suspended under the wing of a small Po-2 "corncob" plane. _x000D_ For these merits comrade Metelyagin was awarded the Order of the Red Star. In a hospital in the city of Vyazniki, he underwent a surgery, lay for a long time, "saved" his leg, but my father began to limp and walk with a cane. After the hospital, he was given a disability and sent on long-term leave to improve his health. _x000D_ He never got back to the front, returned to Izhevsk and in 1945 entered an industrial technical school. He graduated with honors and in 1948 began to study further at the Leningrad Military Mechanical Institute (now the DF Ustinov Baltic State Technical University "Voenmech"), where he received a higher education and a diploma with honors. _x000D_ In civilian life, for a long time he successfully worked as the head of the design department for the Order of Lenin at the Zlatoust machine-building plant in the city of Zlatoust, Chelyabinsk region. Made a significant contribution to the development of non-standard equipment for testing products of special equipment; took part in the design and development of samples of new technology, technological equipment; the introduction of advanced technologies for the manufacture of prototypes and serial samples of products, weapons production, production of household electric stoves and various equipment of the plant's shops.
