Romanov Fedor Vasilievich was born in the village Karlinskoye of Mainskiy district in the Ulyanovsk region. He told his family about his life during the war with tears in his eyes. The troops of the 1-st Ukrainian front completely cleared the Western Ukraine of the German-fascist invaders. They captured a powerful bridgehead on the Wisla river in the Sandomierzkaya region, created conditions for a further offensive into Poland and Czechoslovakia, allied to the Soviet troops, as a result of which the enemy suffered heavy losses in manpower and equipment. They defeated the enemy's Brodsky group of eight divisions, reached the Wisla river and, after crossing it, captured a bridgehead on the west Bank in the Sandomierzkaya area. Thanks to the persistent defensive battles with the enemy, which were going on the offensive by the forces of tank divisions with infantry, the front troops defeated more than one enemy division, completely cleared the southern part of Poland, reached the Oder river and transferred military operations to German territory. After that, the troops of the right wing of the front, breaking through the German defenses on the Oder river, advanced westward, encircling the garrisons of the cities of Glogau and Breslau, in April 1945 destroying the garrison of Glogau, and on may 7, 1945 agreed to the surrender of the garrison of Breslau. Also, the troops of the 1st Ukrainian front defeated the enemy in the Oppelnskiy salient. Thus, after defeating the enemy's Stettin group, the front troops ensured the offensive of the 1st Belorussian front's shock group on Berlin from the north and by May 6, 1945 reached the Stralsund, Wismar line, East of Schwerin, Grabow, and the Eastern Bank of the Elbe river to Wittenberge. Together with the troops of the 1-st Belorussian 1st Ukrainian front, defeated and destroyed the main forces of the 9th army and the 4th tank army of the enemy, and by may 2, 1945 captured the capital of Germany - the city of Berlin. With the capture of the city of Berlin and the defeat of the entire German army on May 8, 1945, Germany capitulated. The troops of the 1-st Ukrainian front liberated the capital of Czechoslovakia (the city of Prague) and, in cooperation with the troops of the 4th and 2-nd Ukrainian fronts, liberated the entire country from the German-fascist invaders, defeated and captured army group Center.
