When he came to the recruiting office with a request to send him to the front line, he was refused, citing his age. A year later, after graduating from the 10th grade of high school, he came to the military registration and enlistment office again and was sent to the Leningrad military school for accelerated courses for the training of miners. But again they failed to get to the front. In 1943, by order of Commander-in-Chief I.V. Stalin, Lev Dmitrievich was sent to study at the Higher Military Engineering School of the Red Army (the future Kuibyshev Academy). In 1948 he graduated from the Academy with the rank of a military civil engineer and a junior lieutenant. Abakumov L.D. served in the active army for 32 years. He served in Rivne, Lviv region, Klyosov, Leningrad region, in Arkhangelsk, Chukotka, in Moscow. He worked at the Central Design Institute of the Ministry of Defense as a chief project engineer. He was directly involved in the construction of the Baikonur cosmodrome. He was engaged in the construction of ground-based facilities necessary for tracking space satellites and ships from the Earth. As a specialist in the construction of antenna systems, he was sent to Cuba and Mongolia. After leaving the Armed Forces, he worked as a civil engineer. In 1991 he retired. But he couldn’t sit around. Died Abakumov L.D. May 24, 2017 at the age of 93.
