An intelligence case: Many interesting stories about the Great Patriotic War were told to my father by his grandfather - Fyodor Kudinov. My great-grandfather was a hero of the great war, which was fought by all Soviet people against fascist Germany. Fyodor Denisovich had the rank of captain during the war and fought in the 4th guards Kuban Cossack cavalry corps. One of the stories my grandfather told my dad especially impressed me: this event happened back in 1944 during the liberation of Soviet Ukraine from the German invaders. Cossack guards often crossed the front line on horseback to get information from the fascist rear. And in one of these raids to the rear of the enemy, in the early morning, a small detachment of 15 Cossacks broke into a small village near the city of Odessa on combat horses. My great-grandfather led the group on his battle horse Orlik. The German officers and soldiers were washing, shaving, cleaning their boots and preparing for breakfast not suspecting anything. The cook was setting a snow-white linen tablecloth on the wooden table for the officers. And at this very moment, the Cossacks rushed to the attack with checkers on the halo. My great-grandfather raised his sword and killed a German officer, then the second and the third. The attack was so unexpected that the fascists did not even have time to give an alarm to the rest of the garrison soldiers. This garrison, as it turned out later, outnumbered the great-grandfather's detachment by several dozen times. Having shown courage and bravery, as well as swiftness of action, my great-grandfather captured and brought a German officer to his headquarters. For this battle, he received a commendation from the command. During the attack, dozens of fascists were killed, and none of our Cossacks were injured. This captured officer with the rank of Major became a very important "tongue" for the Soviet command. A lot of interesting and useful information was received from him on the eve of the general offensive of the front forward to Berlin.
