Golberg (Goldberg) Leonid Isaakovich
Rank: Sergeant. My great-grandfather Leonid Isaakovich Goldberg was born in the town of Glusk, Polessky district, BSSR on June 10, 1926. He graduated from the 7th grade, played football and showed great promise. When the Great Patriotic War began, his father, Isaac Leonidovich, volunteered for the front. In February 1943, the family received a notice that read: ""Goldberg Isaac Leonidovich, born in 1897, the Red Army soldier, a native of the city of Bobruisk, died on April 12, 1943, buried in Smolensk region, the village of Dolina."" My great-grandfather's mother, at that time worked as a nurse on a military train and she was not at home. My grandfather ran home and told his younger sister Sonya about what had happened. He asked her not to tell my mother and grandmother anything . He packed his things in a backpack and went to the station. A train to the front was passing by. He, almost a seventeen-year-old boy, jumped into the car. Most of all, he wanted to avenge the death of his father. So he got to the front. From February 1943, he served in the 15th Western Rifle Regiment as a machine gunner. In March 1943, he was at the disposal of the 272d Guards Rifle Regiment. He was a Rifleman, a Squad leader. At the end of 1944, he joined the tank crew. He was a tank loader, with the rank of Sergeant on the 2nd Belorussian Front. He passed the war from the Kursk bulge, through Lithuania, Poland and finished it in Germany, in the city of Bellegarde. He was injured. Immediately after the end of the war, he joined the Army. From may 1947 to April 1949, he was a cadet. From April 1949, he was the Commander of a self-propelled artillery gun. In November 1950, he was discharged. Later he went to work at aggregate plant “Science” on a speciality ""the mechanic of compressor installations."" He met my great-grandmother at the factory. In 1952, they were married. In 1953, they had a daughter. Since 1994, he worked as a second - class controller-watchman at the Bolshevichka factory. 64 years later, after the end of the great Patriotic war, my grandfather died. He died on May 9, 2009, of cancer. But the fact that he performed a heroic feat, in the name of Victory over the enemy, will remain forever in our hearts!!!"
