Pavel worked as a foreman on a collective farm. Served in the Red Army from 1937 to 1941 within the 112th cavalry regiment in Proskurov. Took part in the Red Army's liberation campaign in Western Ukraine in 1939. Next time he started to serve in the Red Army in 1943, in September. He took part in the liberation of the Sumy region, crossing the Dnieper and Oder river, took part in the battles on the right bank of Ukraine, in the liberation of the cities of Stanislav, Drohobich, Prague. During the war Pavel Stepanovich was shell-shocked. During the night time on December 15-16, 1943, in the area of the state farm Ksaverovsky, Grebenkovsky district of the Kiev region, he acted as a part of the intelligence group when successfully capturing nazi informer right from the enemy positions, and was for such a successful act awarded with the order of the Red Star (order no.:1 / n from: 10.01.1944. Published: 167 KSD 47 SK 40 A 1 of the Ukrainian front). Being encircled in 1944, from January 14 till 25, at the area of Tikhonovka in the Lysinsky district of the Kiev region, he repeatedly went on reconnaissance. On January 21, 1944, in the area of the Alexander forest along with a group of soldiers during reconnaissance, he suddenly attacked a group of nazi soldiers. As a result of this counterattack, the group destroyed up to 10 nazi soldiers. At the same time, valuable documents were seized and delivered to the headquarters. On January 27, 1944, together with a group of scouts on the Lysyanka - Zvenigorodka road, while in an ambush, they hit three cars with enemy cargo with grenades, while destroying up to 15 enemy soldiers. By order of the commander of the 167th rifle division no.: 5/n from: 21.02.1944 he was awarded the order of the Patriotic war II degree. On July 20, 1944, as an assistant to the commander of a platoon of horse intelligence of the 520th Drogobichsky rifle regiment, senior Sergeant Pavel Babchenko with a group of scouts in the depth of the enemy's defense near the village of Tifilovka South-West of the city of Stanislav, destroyed the guards, captured the headquarters and a car with valuable documents. By order of the commander of the 167th rifle division No. 042 / n of August 10, 1944, he was awarded the order of Glory of the 3rd degree for exemplary performance of command tasks in battles with the Nazi invaders. On September 18, 1944, as part of a reconnaissance group, he secretly reached the enemy trenches near the city of Sanok, as a result of which the enemy abandoned their positions. The soldiers defeated the enemy headquarters and captured the battalion commander. From September 18 to October 4, 1944, Pavel Babchenko personally exterminated up to 10 fascists, and took several prisoners. By order for the troops of the 1st guards army No. 061/n of October 29, 1944, he was awarded the order of Glory of the 2nd degree for exemplary performance of command tasks in battles with the Nazi invaders. During the liberation of the railway station Olza from 19 to 22 April 1945, he killed about 10 Nazis with a machine gun. By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on may 15, 1946, he was awarded the order of Glory of the 1st degree for exemplary performance of command tasks in battles with the Nazi invaders, becoming a full knight of the order of Glory. In 1945, he was demobilized. He lived in his native village, worked as a storekeeper on the Lenin collective farm. Then he lived in the city of Lubotin, Kharkiv region. He passed away on June 15, 2001. Pavel Stepanovich was buried in the town of Lubotin.
