Nikolai Ivanovich Kononenkov

Born in 1922 in the Kursk region. He distinguished himself especially in the battles on the Kursk Bulge during the liberation of the city of Orel and the forcing of the Dnieper. Being seriously wounded as a platoon commander, he did not leave the battlefield until the passages in the enemy's defence were completely cleared. He stood to his death, ensuring the successful offensive of the troops during the forcing of the Dnieper and the liberation of Kiev. After the war, he worked as chief engineer at the Chernigov state farm.
