He has served in the rank of Sergeant Guard in the 17th Guards Rifle Regiment, 5th Guards Rifle Red Banner City Division, 3rd Belorussian Front. He was awarded: 1) Medal "For Corauge" - an extract from the award order: "the squad Commander of the Rifle company of Guards Sergeant Yershov Pavel Nikolaevich, is awarded for the fact that being 26.06.44 y. in the battle for the village Zasekli in Orsha district, Vitebsk region, fire from his machine gun at point-blank range, shot two and captured one enemy soldiers." 2) Order of Glory Third Class, for breaking through a heavily fortified enemy strip in the area of villige Vydritsa, Orsha district, Vitebsk region com. Yershov was the first to raise his squad to attack and burst into the trench. In hand-to-hand combat action, com. Yershov killed 12 German soldiers and took three prisoners. Unfortunately, he did not receive the award because he was injured and passed away. In the “death notification” that his wife received on 27.11.1944 it was written: "Your husband, Sergeant Yershov Pavel Nikolaevich was injured and died of wounds on August 18, 1944 in the battle for the socialist Motherland, loyal to the military oath, showing heroism and courage." He was buried with military honors in the village of Kaminitsa, 8 km east of the Lithuanian SSR Kalvaria city. In the difficult post-war years, his wife and daughters did not have the opportunity to visit the grave of their husband and father. And only in 1985, we, his grandchildren, went to Lithuania to the place of our grandfather’s death and visited the soldiers' cemetery in Kalvaria.
