Supporting their infantry with tanks and planes, as well as with heavy shelling, the Nazi began to push the battle formations of the Soviet troops. Senior Sergeant N. I. Batashev with his regiment was ordered to cover the withdrawal of the infantry and his division to the reserve firing positions. Up to a battalion of enemy infantry, supported by one self-propelled gun and a tank, moved to the line of senior Sergeant Batashev. The mortar crew destroyed 2 guns and 4 enemy machine guns. The self-propelled gun of the Germans came to 300-400 meters to the position and opened direct fire at the Batashovs regiment. After several shots, the mortar was smashed and the gunner and loader were killed. Twice wounded, Batashev found the strength to take an anti-tank rifle and engage in a duel with a self-propelled gun. Our artillery, which had changed battle lines, opened fire on the Ferdinand and pinned the enemy's infantry to the ground. Taking advantage of this, the division's scouts evacuated the unconscious Batashev. For the courage and heroism shown in this unequal battle, senior Sergeant N. I. Batashev was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated 10.01.1944. On leaving the hospital after Batashovs healtrh was recovered, he took part in the battles for the liberation of Simferopol and Sevastopol. Awarded with the order of Lenin, the Patriotic War I degree, the Glory order III degree and many medals.
