Vydritsa, Khislavichsky District, Smolensk Region (formerly Mstislavsky District, Mogilev province). In May 1933, he married my grandmother Starostenkova, Alexandra Karpovna. According to her stories before marriage, they knew little of each other, but they lived happily. In February 1935, my mother Galina was born. They worked in a kolkhoz, grandfather built a house, and carried logs for future housing out of the forest. In the village he was known as a merry fellow and a joker. In July 1941, the territory of the Smolensk Region was occupied by German troops, grandfather had to hide from the Germans and policemen. _x000D_ In September 1943, the Khislavichsky District was liberated, together with his fellow villagers, the Khislavichsky Comissariat drafted a Red Army Soldier of the 1156 Rifle Regiment of the 344th Rifle Division. He was fighting with his brother Danil (died of wounds in February 1944), grandmother's brother Kirill Karpovich Starostenkov. _x000D_ One of the first formations of the Mogilev front, the 344th Division entered the Belorussian land. On September 28, 1943, the Division, acting in conjunction with the 196 Tank Brigade, liberated the city of Mstislavl, Mogilev Region of the BSSR. In the Mstislavl Region, the units moved westward and on September 30 cut the Orsha-Krichev railway in the area of the village of Shiroki. In the Goretsky District, on October 1, 1943, the Division liberated the village of Ryasno (the former regional center of the Mogilev Region) and reached the Pronya river south of the city of Dribin, Mogilev Region, where it was stopped. Then, passing 70 km to the north, the Division took the line east of the village of Lenino for joint hostilities with the first Polish Division named after Tadeusz Kosciuszko. After two weeks of fighting, the Polish Division on October 14, 1943 went into reserve, and the 344 Roslavl Division on October 14, 1943 took up defensive positions at the border of the villages of Lenino-Boevo, Goretsky District, Mogilev Region. _x000D_ Grandmother Alexandra Karpovna found out that her grandfather was in the town of Gorki, she dried the biscuits and with other residents of the village of Vydritsa went to visit her husband. Grandfather told her that in the first days of the draft it was hard, there was not enough uniforms and ammunition, but by the beginning of winter they gave out a warm uniform, felt boots. “Now I will definitely come back,” he said to his wife. During the end of 1943 and until the spring of 1944, as part of the 113th Infantry Corps of the 49th Army of the Western Front, the Division fought unsuccessful battles in the Orsha front. In the Byelorussian operation, the Division advances in the second echelon as part of the 62nd Rifle corps of the 33rd Army of the 2nd Byelorussian Front until mid-July 1944, then takes part in the Kaunas operation, on July 17, 1944, forces the Neman near the village of Balberiskis (near Prienai, Lithuania), developing the offensive on 08/02/1944, as part of the 62nd Rifle Corps of the 33rd Army of the 3rd Belorussian Front, participates in the liberation of the city of Vilkaviskis (Lithuania). 08/08/1944 grandfather died of wounds, was buried in the village of Balchun (primary burial). _x000D_ I found such information on the website https://pamyat-naroda.ru/ (Name list No. 20 of irrecoverable losses of sergeants and privates of the 344 Roslavl Infantry Division 07/27/1943 to 08/09/1943 https://pamyat-naroda.ru/heroes/memorial-chelovek_donesenie54886043/).
