V. Strekalov was first timeunder fire in January 1942. He fought in the 97th Heavy Howitzer Artillery Brigade of the 145th Artillery Regiment of the 82nd Artillery Division. During the war, he was shell-shocked three times. He reached Berlin, where he wrote on the wall of the Reichstag: "Strekalov from Komi".
