Mahmud Abilov was born in 1898 in the village of Ukur, Qusary. He made his way from an ordinary soldier to a combat general of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. M.A. Abilov during the Civil War, Abilov was a soldier of the XI Red Army, and in 1938 he was a battalion commander, a participant in battles with Japanese troops near Lake Khasan. Company commander of the 77th Azerbaijan Mountain Rifle Division, squad leader of the 3rd Baku Infantry Regiment, course commander of the Transcaucasian Infantry School (Tbilisi), squad leader of the same school. After graduating from the Academy of the Commander-in-Chief of the Red Army, the commander of the 146th separate rifle brigade of the Siberian Military District. In 1942, together with his brigade, he was placed at the disposal of the command of the 34th Army of the North-Western Front, participated in the liberation of the cities of Smolensk, Elena, Roslavl. In the periods 04/14/1943 - 02/09/1944, 03/15/1944 - 05/27/1944 commanded 70 Rifle Division. In 1944, he showed skill in the liberation of a large number of cities, villages and railway junctions of Belarus, captured by the Nazis. Then he commanded the 250th rifle division and walked the glorious path from Demyansk to Berlin itself, to the Elbe River, where he met with the allies in the anti-Hitler coalition - with the Anglo-American troops. Before the Berlin offensive operation on April 20, 1945, by the decision of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR M.A. Abilov at the age of 47 was awarded the rank of major general. He is the only military general in Dagestan and one of two from Azerbaijan (along with Hazi Aslanov) who received this title during the Great Patriotic War. On May 2, 1945, the city of Moscow and the capitals of all Soviet Union republics saluted in honor of the Soviet troops who completed the liquidation of the group of fascist troops encircled in the south-east of Berlin. The order dated to this great event also reflects the name of Major General M.A. Abilova. Many bright pages in the history of the Red Army were written during the war by the 250th division of M.A. Abilova. The homeland highly appreciated his military achievements. He was awarded the Orders of Suvorov II degree and Kutuzov II degree, as well as the Orders of Bogdan Khmelnitsky, the Red Star, the American Cross of Honor I degree of the officer's legion, 14 medals. The formations commanded by Major General Mahmud Abilov have repeatedly successfully solved the combat missions of the command in defensive and especially offensive operations, which is reflected in the orders of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief I.V. Stalin. Seven times in honor of the soldiers of General M.A. Abilov, the capital of the Motherland, Moscow, saluted. He was dismissed by a decree of the Ministry of Defense on December 13, 1955. On August 22, 1998, by the decree of the President of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev, at the republican level in Baku, Qusar and in the native village of General Ukur, festive events were held on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of M.A. Abilova. In memory of the great compatriot, the central square of the city of Qusar and one of the central streets of the city, as well as one of the streets of Baku bear the honorary name of Mahmud Abilov. Also on the central square of Kusarov, a bust of Mahmud Abilov was erected on a high pedestal. In recent years, since the erection of the bust of the general in Qusar, a remarkable tradition has developed when wedding corteges passing through the square, stopping, lay flowers at the bust of General Abilov.
