Military rank is Sergeant. Branch of troops: Signal troops.
My mother, Kutkova (Korneeva) Maria Andreyevna was born in 1922 in the village of Zyablukha, Mezhevsky district, Kostroma region. She was called up by the Mezhevsky Regional Miilitary Commissariate (RVC) of the Gorky region (now Kostroma region) and sent to the school of military radiotelegraphists in the city of Gorky. She spent the entire war in radio intelligence. Rather, a certain area of it that controls the enemy's bomber aircraft. Her task was to intercept radio communications of long-range aircrafts. Basically, they were twin-engine "Heinkel-111". That's how she spent the entire war with headphones and a pencil. The General Staff highly appreciated Special Assigment Radio units (OSNAZ) and tried to protect them from German air strikes as much as possible. These were elite, but not advanced units, and there was nothing outwardly heroic about my mother's service. March 8, 1943, my mom was awarded a silver medal "For Military Merit" for exemplary performance of tasks of the Сhief Directorate of Red Army Command at the front struggle with German invaders, reflected in the fact that in a timely manner, she helped and provided the enemy aviation localization on the Central front. And she was only 20 years old. Then there were the Medals "For the Liberation of Warsaw", "For the Capture of Berlin" and, of course, "For the victory over Germany". But the most adorable one for her was always that first medal. My mother was the first at her Belarusian front to catch operation priority message about the Germans surrender while searching for the enemy's radio networks. But this information was no longer strategic and medals were not provided for it, but it brought a joy that was not comparable to the award of 1943. We, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren revere our mother’s memory and on May 9 we thank her for the Great Victory that her generation has got with so much effort.
