Dmitry Nikolaevich Garkunov was born into the dynasty of priests of the Vyatka province. In 1941, he graduated from the faculty of physics and mathematics of Tomsk state University with a degree in solid state physics. From 1941 to 1970, he served in the Soviet Army. He participated in the Great Patriotic war, participated in the liberation of Belarus as part of the 49th guards fighter aviation regiment. He finished the war in Dresden (Germany). In 1945 he graduated from the engineering Department of the Zhukovsky Air Force Academy. After the war, he worked at the research institute for the operation and repair of aircraft. Engineer-Colonel of aviation, awarded with 18 orders and medals of the USSR and Russia. In 1962, he defended his doctoral dissertation on "Methods for improving the wear resistance of aircraft parts". Author of 2 scientific discoveries: the phenomenon of "selective transfer" (the effect of wearlessness) and "hydrogen wear of metals". From 1970 to 2004, a proffesor, the head of departments of a range national universities. Founder of the scientific school of tribology in Russia. Winner of the Russian Government Prize in science and technology; Winner of the Russian President's prize in education. For outstanding scientific achievements, the international Council for tribology awarded Garkunov the Gold medal of the British Royal society of tribological engineers. Despite the venerable age (98 years) participates in various events dedicated to research in the field of tribology.
