. Since June 1941 he participated in battles of the Great Patriotic War. By Decree №858 of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 14, 1942 Guards Captain Mikhail Vasilievich Avdeev was awarded the title of a Hero of the Soviet Union for exemplary performance of combat missions of the command on the battlefront against the Nazi invaders and for the shown courage and heroism. Later he took part in the Battle of the Caucasus, Novorossiysk-Taman, Crimean, Odessa and Jassy-Kishinev Offensive Operations. In total during the war he made about 400 mission sorties on I-16, Yak-1 and Yak-9 fighters. In 88 air battles he personally shot down 12 enemy planes and 6 enemy aircrafts were downed in a group.
