Markelov Nikolai Stepanovich (born May 21, 1900) - Red Army soldier, gunner of an anti-tank gun of the 4th company of the 1050th regiment of the 301st rifle division. During the Second World War he fought on the Southwestern, 3rd Ukrainian and 1st Belorussian fronts. He took part in the defense of Kiev and Kharkov, the liberation of Ukraine and Poland. He was awarded the medal “For Courage”. The title of Hero of the USSR was awarded posthumously on February 27, 1945 for the courage and heroism shown during the crossing of the Pilitsa River and in the battle to hold the bridgehead on its West Bank. Buried in a mass grave on Polish soil. A school in the village of Maksimovka in our district is named in honor of a fellow-hero.
