Grigory Nikiforovich Zhuravlev (1925-1945)
Grigory Nikiforovich Zhuravlev (1925-1945). Born in Khmelevka, Sorokinsky district. In January 1943 he was drafted to the front. He served as commander of a rifle platoon of the 182nd separate army penalty company. In April 1945, the most persistent and bloody battles took place in Czechoslovakia. Hitlerites fought with the despair of the doomed. A rifle platoon of penalty shooters commanded by Zhuravlev in the area of Terkhovo literally jumped into the powerful belts of reinforced concrete fortifications. Every meter of foreign land was paid for with the lives of our soldiers. Lieutenant Zhuravlev died on 23 April during the victorious spring of 1945 in Prague.
