Sorokin, Nikolay Stepanovich_x000D_ Branch of troops: Artillery. He was born in the village of Tolsky Maidan on December 20, 1923. Before the war he studied at the Tolskoy Maidan Secondary School and worked in a kolkhoz. In the fall of 1941, he was sent to build fortifications near the city of Gorky, being the schoolboy of the last 10th grade. Upon arrival home, he was called up for military service and sent to the city of Kostroma to the 3rd Leningrad Artillery School. From February to August 1, 1942 he was a cadet, then a Junior Sergeant. From August to October 1942, he was a Sergeant and Commander of a Reconnaissance Department in 3 batteries of a Separate Artillery Division of the 92nd Rifle Brigade of the 62nd Army in the city of Stalingrad. He took part in the defense of Stalingrad. Once he and a group of soldiers defended a house in Stalingrad, which was destroyed during the combat and captured by German troops. _x000D_ And Nikolai Stepanovich was covered with the rubble and was left unconscious. Just two days later, the Russians recaptured this house and heard groans coming from under the rubble. They removed the wounded soldier and sent him to the hospital. _x000D_ After this combat, a death notice came to the village. It was declared that Sorokin N.S. was killed in action on October 16, 1942 during the defense of Stalingrad and was buried in Volgograd. (Such an entry is in the Book of Memory.) After leaving the hospital, from April 28, 1943 to July 6, 1946, he served in the 29th Cavalry Regiment. Then he was sent to Turkmenistan in the 27th Frontier Detachment to the Iranian border, where he served for three years. He was demobilized on March 31, 1949. _x000D_ During his service he was awarded with certificates of honor and medals. After demobilization, he studied and worked at the School until 1977. For health reasons, he moved to work in a kolkhoz as Chief Power Engineer. Nikolai Sorokin passed away and was buried in the Tolsky Maidan.
