When the Great Patriotic War began, my great-grandfather was not immediately called to the front. During the first year of the war, the grandfather of armor was in his collective farm, he was given the task to hide the collective farm equipment from the Nazis and protect it. Behind the village where my grandfather lived, there was a ravine, and there his team pulled all the equipment and disguised it with branches, grass, everything they could. A year later, my great-grandfather was called to the front at the age of 39. He got into the infantry. On horseback, my grandfather brought weapons and ammunition to the soldiers, and from the battlefield took the wounded to the hospital. He saved many soldiers. Then my great-grandfather became a driver, driving a Lieutenant General. My great-grandfather went through the roads of war a lot, told me how he liberated Poland. One of the most terrible memories of that war for him was the release of prisoners from a concentration camp in the city of Lublin. In this concentration camp there was a monstrous treatment and destruction of people. Sick, hungry, weak people were forced to work hard, dissatisfied people were beaten, and given to dogs to eat. On the territory of the concentration camp there were several crematoriums where people were burned, including children. When my great-grandfather told me about it, he cried. My great-grandfather fought at the front until the end of the war and did not reach Berlin for a while. My great-grandfather was awarded medals and orders for his military services. Order of the red star, order of the Patriotic war, medal "for the victory over Germany", medal "for the defense of the Caucasus", many medals of the war participant. My grandfather and father kept them and cherish them as a memory of my great-grandfather and that terrible war. Great-grandfather experienced a lot during the war, saw many horrors, but remained a kind, sympathetic, noble person until the end of his life. He always helped his family, acquaintances, and friends in trouble. He was not broken by this brutal war. After the war, he worked in his native collective farm "Russia". He was very hardworking, loved his Homeland, his family. He lived with my great-grandmother, whom he loved very much, for 60 years. He raised three sons as honest, decent people. Already in his old age, my grandfather had to go through another war - the Chechen war, he had to give up everything and move to the children in the city of Svetlograd. He died in 1994 at the age of 83 and is buried in Svetlograd. The military enlistment office erected a monument to my grandfather as a participant in the war. We visit his grave with the whole family and take care of it. All my relatives have a bright memory of my great-grandfather Ivan Paukov.
