Stepan Yakovlevich was born on December 24, 1911 in Novoarkhangelskoye village, Orenburg region. In 1939 he graduated from the Kuibyshev Agricultural Institute. He started to work in collective farm “Krasnaya Niva”. Stepan Yakovlevich got to know about the beginning of the war in the field. He was drafted into the Army in October 1942 by the May District Military Commissariat. After being drafted into the army, he was sent to courses in Essentuki, where he received the military specialty of a mortar and the military rank of Second lieutenant. The first battle for the commander was near Kerch, Crimea. Then there was the Battle of Stalingrad.
