When the Great Patriotic War began Mikhail Vasilievich Vorobyov, Secretary of the Yevpatoria District Party Committee, was called up to the front by the Yevpatoria Regional Military Commissariat. He rose from the Unit Political Officer to the Head of the Political Department of the 307th Rifle Division, then of the 81st Rifle Division of the 21st Rifle Corps of the 13th Army. He participated in the defense of Moscow, in the Oryol-Bryansk Defensive Operation (Battle of Bryansk). For his courage and bravery shown in the Voronezh–Kastornoye Offensive Operation (liberation of Voronezh) he was awarded the Order of the Red Star. M. V. Vorobyov participated in the Battle of Kursk, in the Oryol Strategic Counteroffensive Operation (Operation Kutuzov) as part of the 81st Division of the 13th Army (Central Front).
