Ivan Andreevich Zvonarev, born in 1924, voluntarily joined the ranks of Red Army in August 1942. He was assigned to the Lepel Mortar and Artillery School based in Barnaul. In April 1943 after graduating from the school Lieutenant Zvonarev was assigned to the 21st Airborne Rifle Regiment of the 7th Guards Airborne Division of the 4th Guards Army of the Steppe Front as a Firing Platoon Commander. Participated in the Battle of Kursk (Kursk Bulge), was repeatedly wounded.
