Family. My great-grandfather Gritsay Vasily Ivanovich was called up to the front on 11.07.41 from Ukraine, Voroshilovgrad Region, Uspensky District. He and my great-grandmother moved there from our village (stanitsa) of Leningradskaya just before the war. My great-grandfather was a Lieutenant, Commander of the Rifle platoon of submachine gunners of the 897th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 242nd Mountain Rifle Taman Division, a scout. The 242nd Rifle Division was formed in the summer of 1941 in Moscow Military District and fought in the Western direction. By August, 5 the division had lost more than 3.500 men killed, missed and wounded. Killed in action on September 28, 1944 liberating Poland from the Nazis. Buried in Poland.
