Vasily Vasilievich Reshetnikov_x000D_ _x000D_ Vasily Vasilyevich Reshetnikov (born December 23, 1919, Yekaterinoslav) – Soviet military pilot, Hero of the Soviet Union (1943), Commander of Long-Range Aviation (1969-1980), Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the USSR Air Force, Retired Aviation Colonel-General, Honored Military Pilot of the USSR (1965 ). _x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ Vasily Vasilyevich Reshetnikov was born on December 23, 1919 in the city of Yekaterinoslav (Dnepro-Petrovsk). From a family of hereditary artists and icon painters (his uncle, the artist F.P. Reshetnikov, is best known). He graduated from the seven-year school number 13, then studied at the workers' faculty. In 1936, at the call "Komsomolets – on the plane!" was sent to the Red Army. Graduated from the Voroshilovgrad Military Aviation School named after the Proletariat of Donbass in 1938. He served in long-range aviation. Since 1941 – in the 751st separate night long-range bomber regiment of Major Tikhonov, designed to strike at targets in the enemy's deep rear. He flew on an IL-4 bomber (DB-3F). Member of the CPSU since 1942. At the end of May 1942, he took part in the bombing of the Hitlerite command post in Angerburg. Participated in the bombing of Berlin on the night of September 10, 1942. Then he took part in the Battle of Stalingrad. _x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ On July 27, 1943, Guard Captain, Squadron Commander of the 19th Guards Long-Range Aviation Regiment of the 8th Guards Long-Range Bomber Aviation Division of the 2nd Guards Long-Range Bomber Aviation Corps Vasily Vasilyevich Reshetnikov was awarded with the title of Hero of the Soviet Union (decree of the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Soviet July 27, 1943, medal "Gold Star" No. 1055). _x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ Reshetnikov's plane was shot down twice. The first time was in February 1942, near the front line, when he bombed the Balbasovo airfield near Orsha. Second, it took more than a week to get out of the enemy's rear. In 1943 he participated in the liberation of his hometown from German invaders. The last, 307th in a row, sortie on April 16, 1945. He ended the war as deputy regiment commander. Immediately after the war, he was sent to study and in 1946 he graduated from the accelerated course of the Air Force Academy in Monino. In the summer of 1946, he returned to his 19th Guards Long-Range Bomber Aviation Regiment and was appointed its commander (replaced A. Shaposhnikov as regiment commander, who in the early years of the war helped him master the skill of night flights). _x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ He commanded the regiment for 8 years. In 1954, at his own request and with the support of the Commander of Long-Range Aviation, Chief Marshal of Aviation A. A. Novikov, he became a student of the Higher Military Academy named after K. E. Voroshilov. He graduated from the academy in 1956 and was appointed to the position of division commander. In the spring of 1959, together with General V. T. Taranov, he set a new unofficial world record for the flight range along a closed curve – 17,150 kilometers, surpassing the American record by 2,700 kilometers. Then he spent 20 hours at the helm. From 1968 – First Deputy Commander, and from January 20, 1969 to 1980 – Commander of Long-Range Aviation. In these posts, he headed several state armament commissions. From 1981 to 1986 – Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the USSR Air Force. The last time a pilot took to the skies was in 2003, when he was 83 years old – at the Monino air show, he flew an American B-25 bomber, which was brought in from Austria by an Austrian pilot. _x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ Currently he is a pensioner, living in the urban-type settlement of Monino (Moscow region). For more than 30 years he actively participated in the Council of Veterans of Long-Range Aviation, for 10 years he was the chairman of this Council, then he is its honorary chairman. Author of several books of memoirs. Today (May 2020) V.V. Reshetnikov is the last of the living Heroes of the Soviet Union who fought on the IL-4. One of the strategic bombers of the Russian Air Force "Tu-160" is named after Vasily Vasilyevich Reshetnikov.
