Yakov Sharenkov was a member of the second generation of the seafarers' dynasty. The Maritime tradition of several generations of Sharenkovs began with his father Ivan, who stormed the rebellious forts of Kronstadt. Yakov was born in the small village of Hiriki in the Okulovskiy district of the Novgorod region. During the Finnish war, as a naval artillery scout, he corrected the fire of soviet batteries. In the Great Patriotic Wwar, he fought on the destroyer Friedrich Engels. It was torpedoed in 1941 by the Germans and sank. Yakov escaped miraculously, but was severely wounded. After the hospital, he served on the turboelectric ship Joseph Stalin. The fate of a military sailor is difficult and dangerous, and Yakov again found himself between life and death. Under heavy fire of German warships, the Joseph Stalin splitted in two pieces. One of them immediately sunk. Icy water covered Yakov and he almost lost a hope of salvation when the crew of the icebreaker Ermak, which happened to be nearby, saved him. Yakov was a good skier and during the siege of Leningrad helped to build the Road of life on the ice of Ladoga Lake – the only link between the exhausted city and the Mainland. The evacuation of thousands of people, the supply of food and weapons that help the city of sea glory withstand a grueling siege - all this is also due to Yakov Sharenkov. For his courage and bravery, he was awarded five orders of the Red Star, the order of the Patriotic War and many medals. He met his life friend Anna at the front. She volunteered to the Red Army, went through the siege of Leningrad, served as a radio operator, providing communication with warships. The war ended for them in Germany, where they served until 1947. Their son Igor named after his grandfather also a sailor was born there. After the service, they returned to the Okulovskiy District, where Igor spent his childhood. He graduated from High School, Electrical Engineering Institute, and started to work at the Volna (Wave) plant in Novgorod. Then he served in the Northern Fleet, retired as a Captain of the Second Rank. His Grandson, Great-Ggrandson of Yakov is currently studying second year in the Higher Naval School.
